Yeah.  You heard me.  It’s a hard task to do, but even itty-bitty baby steps can greatly improve your health.  Get MAD!  GET MADDER THAN MAD!  Open that pantry.  Open those cabinets.  Get a large garbage bad or box and empty your life of all the processed stuff that contains potentially harmful substance such as High Fructose Corn Syrup, Artificial Color, Artificial Sweeteners, artificial preservatives, and a line of words you cant read less less pronounce.  If the ingredients is not in basic English (eg. salt, lemon juice, pineapple, cinnamon, garlic, etc), if they are in Chinese or some Scientific language you don’t understand, or what looks like a sting of profane words written on a box, can, or bag, dump them!  Do not pass GO! Do not collect Two Hundred (unless the stores would accept them back.  Good luck with this too.), do not give them to your domesticated animals (Many of those poor creatures also suffer from chronic diseases, and have their own line of medicine, like we do.).  But… you may wanna give those WMD to the nosy neighbor!

Wholesome foods

Whatever happened to eating from the table of nature?  Well, it flew out the door with the Industrial Revolution.  It’s not only thatprocessed foods (fake, fabricated food in boxes, cans, bags, frozen containers) lack nutrient density and nutritional quality (stuff that the body can use to help build it up/strengthen it/heal it/give it the energy it needs to function properly), but they are replete and  heavy laden with synthetic stuff that over the year could help make you obese and throw our system into metabolic syndrome.  This my friend can lead to heart problems, kidney problems, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, cancer and the likes.

Great source of Omega-3. Yum. Nutritious. Caught them myself in Miami

Warning! Partially Hydrogenated oil bad for arteries! This should be put on this lable.

It may be refreshing to know that well-meaning people went to great length in laboratories to created processed foods to KILL US help us “save time” to stay busy and work long shift like you and I do at those generous hospitals whose perfect environment is also conducive to health (I know…YEAH RIGHT!).  Let’s say that processed and fast foods helps us save some time from working barefoot in that kitchen, slaving over the stove cooking something that is natural and tasty. But, think of the time you could loose sitting in the long lines at a Doctor’s office waiting for your number to be called, or the time you may have to lay in bed trying to recuperate from the knife (surgery), or the time your family may one day have to shed a few tears,  prematurely, while watching someone shovel dirt over you in a box (I know. This is neither kosher nor nice, but part of a nurse’s job is to educate, though graphic it may seem.).

Below are a few ingredients everyone should try their best to avoid ingesting.  They can be dangerous, obesigenic (obesity-causing), and oftentimes leading to chronic long-term diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and a host of stuff that could sooner or later cripple you or make it impossible for you to even BLINK your eyes (death!):

  • High Fructose Corn Syrup
  • Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) (sometimes is disguised as “spices”
  • Trans Fats (Hydrogenated Vegetable oils), Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, and artificial fats such as Olestra
  • Sodium Nitrite and nitrates, (found in processed meats), Potassium Bromate
  • Synthetic Hormones such as BPA, Phthalates, most of which disrupts our endocrine system
  • Artificial sweeteners such as Aspartame, Acesulfame-K, Saccharin,
  • Preservatives and Additives: Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA)—synthetic antioxidant (que demonios!) found in butter, cereals, and other foods;
  • Dyes and Colorings: Carmel coloring (sound innocent right?), and a host of Red, Blue, Yellow—Sunset Yellow (those colors that makes a kid or a grown up-kid warm inside)

Try avoid this...

Now, let’s get back to the running.  This is what we are about.  Well, if you are taking your health seriously, and want to run in the best shape possible, it would be proper for you to learn about some things that you want to avoid and totally discard from your pantries and refrigerators.  They could handicap you.  You want to run in good metabolic health, and many of those food additives/preservatives could throw your chemistry off balance.  This applies to any physical activity not just running.  If you want to start running and have a chronic disease like mentioned above, please first consult with your medical Doctor!

This week I met with my Team In Training Coach Denny on on a tract field in Central Park, in Plantation, and did some interval training (run one lap, walk one lap and so) and I felt very good!  Yesterday my Aunt Emelda and I did an hour of brisk walking and went about our day feeling great.  She is also a healthcare professional and I am proud of her effort in trying to maintain her health.  Kudos Antie!  Today, I will tackle that beach and run barefoot as soon as I get a chance. OYE!  I hope you are making a bold step to make even itty-bitty changes, get rid of those the foods with all those artificial and addictive substances in your kitchen.  Take the initiative to encourage others do the same.  Forward this post to those you love or people that you’d like to help, yes, even the nosy neighbor—maybe she/he would not have the spare time to be all un in your bees-wax).
